The Good Shepherd at Lake Wylie...

A somewhat unusual and essential feature of the Church of the Good Shepherd is its satellite congregation in the Lake Wylie Area.

In the early stages of River Hills Plantation, Mr. and Mrs. Jord Jordon visited the Church of the Good Shepherd and were so touched by the "beautiful little church" that he invited every Episcopalian living in River Hills to a barbecue at his home. At that barbecue, The Rev. Thomas Hudson (then Rector) and the Senior Warden gave a presentation about the Church of the Good Shepherd, which led to an increase in membership at the church in York.

In 1984, the Rev. George McCollough, a resident of River Hills, was called as the Interim Rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd. That same year, Fr. McCollough began holding an 8:00am service which met in Dick Murphy's office at Moore's Landing in Lake Wylie. After a few years, the service was moved to the River Hills Community Church.

At present, the congregation continues to gather at 8:00am in a building at the corner of S.C. Highways 49 and 557, across from the Food Lion and next to the Good Samaritan United Methodist Church. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated each Sunday (followed by an always wonderful "coffee hour") and additional services are held there on most principal Holy Days.

At one time, there was some discussion about relocating the congregation to a church plant at the Palisades Episcopal School. While this is still a viable option, the area seems to be experiencing such growth that it may be feasible to have congregations on both sides of the lake - one in the Diocese of North Carolina, and one in the Diocese of Upper South Carolina.

Mr. John Ness is the current Vestry Liason to the congregation at Lake Wylie.
